It can take longer to heat a room installed with an underlay compared with that of a ceramic tile or vinyl area without underlay. But once temperature equalisation has taken place, the temperature remains more
stable.

As a general rule, density is more important than thickness, particularly. For under carpet, a thicker underlay offers good cushioning and softness underfoot.

A denser underlay provides superior insulation and acoustic performance in both carpet and hard flooring applications. Under carpet it can also reduce flattening or indentations left by heavy furniture or high traffic areas.

It depends on the type of flooring. Residential broadloom carpet requires underlay whereas commercial carpet tiles are generally glued down or looselay so do not need underlay.

Laminate flooring must have an underlay, while engineered timber only needs underlay if installed as a floating floor. If timber is glued down then no underlay is required.
